Sixteen-year-old Johanna flees Cambaluc in 1322, following the murder of her father and the murderous intentions of her step-mother, accompanied by her foster sister and wise woman Shasha, and by Jaufre, an orphan of the Road who has been raised to be her companion—and who hopes to become more. Together they take to the Road, that storied collection of routes that link the silks of Cathay, the spices of the Indies and the jewels of the Indus to the markets of the western world. Their destination? Venice, that fabled port of the Middle Sea, and the home of Johanna's her grandfather, the legendary Marco Polo.

But first they must survive treachery, betrayal, a war of conquest waged by an ambitious Mongol general, a long separation, and a Road beset by thieves and robbers emboldened by the steady deterioration of the Mongol Empire. They meet a chugi monk, a goliard, a Knight Templar, and two refugees from the harem of Sheik Mohammed of Talikan, but in spite of these new friends it is still a long and difficult journey, at the end of which they arrive in Venice only to discover Marco Polo on his deathbed.

The Land Beyond, the third and final book in the Silk and Song trilogy, opens in Venice in 1324, where Johanna and company must find a new patron, a new way to earn their living, and above all a new home—all of which is complicated by a cunning kidnapping, a daring rescue, a tragic death, and a brush with royalty that puts Johanna and Jaufre and all their friends in the most danger they've seen yet.

Dana Stabenow concludes her 3 book series about Marco Polo's granddaughter in fine style as Johanna's extended trading family continues their way East. Traveling, trading, plotting and fighting, when necessary; they dispatch despots, make friends and create the necessary alliances to ensure a viable future. An interesting segment of history told well with very diverse and interesting characters traversing from Asia to Europe during a very challenging time period.

The Land Beyond Silk and Song Book 3 edition by Dana Stabenow Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Charming romantic adventure with several interesting characters and an intriguing historical and geographical setting the time of Marco Polo, or just after. Some readers may find it too long and intricate a series of adventures for the heroine and her friends, or may feel they have to wait too long for the hot sex! But be patient, it's coming.
I read mystery, fantasy, and historical fiction; generally I don't like the writing of an author that crosses from one genre to another but Stabenow did nail this. Story line is complex enough to be interesting but does not get so complicated that one needs to keep a list of characters handy in order to follow the story. the author takes some liberties with the history but not to the point that the reader is asked to completely suspend his sense of time.
Have been a fan of Dana's Kate Shugak mysteries for years, so I knew it would be a good read. In addition to a great "quest" adventure, this well-researched trilogy will give you the taste and feel of life in Asia and Europe in the time of Marco Polo (14th Century). If I were a college history teacher I'd assign it to my students. (Might be a little problematic for some high school students because of the sex and violence, although I'd have been fine with our children reading it when they were in high school.)
This third and final volume of Silk and Song is the beautiful and mind capturing finish. Joanna, Night Wind, and the rest of the company do not disappoint, with adventure on every page, along with the inevitable moments when Night Wind changes the course of situations.

Beautifully written, this last volume transports the reader back to the 1300's, and only reluctantly allows return to the present century. Enjoy the journey
A suitable end to the trilogy, though I found myself wishing for more and felt this was around 30% too short. There is so much more local detail that could have been interwoven with events following arrival in Britain -- there is a wealth of well-established material about this era which could have given the tale more weighth and extended it further. Still and all, the essentials of life (and love) were covered off, with links are made back to earlier stages of the saga and running threads neatly tied.
Good read. Dana Stabenow grabs and engages the reader well. All three books in this trilogy were relatively short and quick reads, though. I think they could easily be a single book. Also poor proof reading with a lot of typos that I noticed. These minor complaints did not interfere with my enjoyment of the story, though.
Love Dana Stabenow's other series. This one does not disappoint. Her characters are well done, the plot line is comprehensive and logical, dialogue is realistic and lightly done. The story is captivating and plausible. Dana has done her homework on various cultures and presents them in their negative and positive aspects quite well. This particular book covers the arrival in England and ultimate resolution to the group's search. Dana doesn't just regurgitate facts and historic events as written by the winner, she makes the effort to humanize those events and persons we often see as the losers in history.
